Who Do We Serve?
Both the First Reading from Joshua and the Gospel today ask us to think about whom we serve. In another Scripture passage Jesus also tells us that we cannot serve two masters, we cannot serve both God and man. So whom do we choose to serve?
If you are reading this, I assume you have chosen to serve God, but do our actions always reflect this choice? What gets in my way of serving God faithfully and what does it mean to be a good and faithful servant? How do we live our faith and serve our God?
One of the main ways is by attending Mass on a regular basis in our faith community. At Mass we are nourished for the journey. Today in Scripture we hear Jesus acknowledge that following his way is hard but that he will provide what we need. His words are Spirit and Life. The last several Sundays we have listened to Jesus’ Bread of Life Discourse as he has explained that he is the Living Bread, our spiritual source of nourishment. Even in Jesus’ own day people decided it was not worth the effort Jesus was asking from his followers. They chose to serve a different master, themselves.
When we set our alarms on Sunday morning to attend Mass rather than sleeping in, we are choosing God. When we volunteer to help in a ministry that may require some of our time, we are choosing God. When we help a neighbor in need or even a stranger, we are choosing God. When we donate to a worthy cause instead of buying something for ourselves, we are serving God.
If we continue by our actions to be faithful to Jesus’ call, then we like Joshua can say, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

¿A quién servimos?
Tanto la primera lectura de Josué como el Evangelio de hoy nos piden que pensemos a quién servimos. En otro pasaje de las Escrituras, Jesús también nos dice que no podemos servir a dos amos, no podemos servir a Dios y al hombre. Entonces, ¿a quién elegimos servir?
Si estás leyendo esto, supongo que has elegido servir a Dios, pero ¿nuestras acciones siempre reflejan esta elección? ¿Qué se interpone en mi manera de servir a Dios fielmente y qué significa ser un buen y fiel servidor? ¿Cómo vivimos nuestra fe y servimos a nuestro Dios?
Una de las formas principales es asistir a Misa regularmente en nuestra comunidad de fe. En la misa nos nutrimos para el viaje. Hoy en las Escrituras escuchamos a Jesús reconocer que seguir su camino es difícil, pero que él proporcionará lo que necesitamos. Sus palabras son Espíritu y Vida. Los últimos domingos hemos escuchado el Discurso del Pan de la Vida de Jesús al explicar que él es el Pan Viviente, nuestra fuente espiritual de alimento. Incluso en los días de Jesús la gente decidió que no valía la pena el esfuerzo que Jesús le pedía a sus seguidores. Eligieron servir a un maestro diferente, ellos mismos.
Cuando configuramos nuestras alarmas el domingo por la mañana para asistir a la Misa en lugar de dormir, elegimos a Dios. Cuando nos ofrecemos como voluntarios para ayudar en un ministerio que puede requerir algo de nuestro tiempo, estamos eligiendo a Dios. Cuando ayudamos a un vecino necesitado o incluso a un extraño, estamos eligiendo a Dios. Cuando donamos a una causa digna en lugar de comprar algo para nosotros mismos, estamos sirviendo a Dios.
Si continuamos con nuestras acciones para ser fieles al llamado de Jesús, entonces nos agrada que Josué pueda decir: “En cuanto a mí y a mi casa, serviremos al Señor”.
